Before the Armistice, over 1.7 million American troops came through Hoboken on their way to Europe. This statue in Elysian Park commemorates the soldiers of World War I with a quote from General John J. Pershing, who is credited with the rallying statement, "Heaven, Hell or Hoboken by Christmas":
To Perpetuate the glorious
memory of our citizen soldiery
who willingly sacrificed their lives
that civilization might not perish
we pledge our unfaltering purpose
to uphold forever the principles
for which they fought and died
